The youth of tomorrow won’t just be driving far more. They will also be flying, ideally with their beloved, but increasingly with their 2.2 children, too. Already air-passenger numbers in the top-20 airports exceed 100 million (South Africa and Egypt dominate). Based on Renaissance estimates of air-passenger numbers against per capita GDP, passenger numbers in Africa should be 85 million in 2010. But rising income means that doubles every decade, to nearly 200 million by 2020, 400 million by 2030, 900 million by 2040 and 1.7 billion by 2050. This will hopefully be recognised by Lagos and Nairobi airport developers and helps justify Rwanda’s plans to develop a new capital airport. It may be a trend that Stelios Haji-Ioannou, founder of EasyJet (a European low-cost airline) is fully aware of. His next project is to establish FastJet in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and Angola.
